Argyle International Airport
Argyle International Airport is an international airport that is under construction in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The groundbreaking took place in 2008, and the facility is expected to be completed by end of 2015. The airport will cost around $240 million, and will replace the existing E.T. Joshua Airport. It will have passenger capacity nearly four times that of the older facility.
== Overview ==
The small size of the E.T. Joshua Airport runway requires tourist, visitors and Vincentians to get connecting flights through different islands (mainly Barbados (Grantley Adams International Airport), St. Lucia (Hewanorra International Airport) and Grenada (Maurice Bishop International Airport) if they wish to travel more than a short distance. Given the surrounding geography, it would be difficult to extend the runway and building space at E.T. Joshua. Two sites were considered for a new airport to accommodate more passengers and longer flights: Argyle on the eastern side of the island and Kitchen to the southeast. Argyle was selected and work began on 8 August 2008. Cuba, Turkey, Iran, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, Austria and Mexico are helping with the construction. The runway is expected to be around 9,000 feet long and 150 feet wide.
The new airport was originally scheduled to open in 2012. The project has cost EC $729 million to date and has suffered from many delays and has missed several completion dates with paving on the runway still incomplete as well as bridging the river that bisects the runway.〔http://www.iwnsvg.com/2015/02/15/private-sector-didnt-expect-argyle-airport-to-be-completed-in-2014/〕 This schedule has been updated to reflect an opening date of late 2015.
